Produced in 1979, the Leopard 2 is an improvement on its predecessor, the Leopard 1. Upgrade options for the Leopard 2 include Atlas Elektronik's Vehicle Integrated Command and Information System (IFIS) and technical developments under Upgrading Levels I and II. To enhance the tank's effectiveness, Rheinmetall GmbH of Ratingen, Germany has developed the 120-millimeter L55 smoothbore gun, enabling use of the DM53 (LKE II) APFSDS-T round with its longer rod penetrator.
